The Lord’s Supper is a sacrament instituted by Jesus Christ on the night he was betrayed. It reminds us of his death and is to be observed until he returns to this earth. But even more than simply remembering what he did for us on the cross, when we receive the Lord’s Supper in the right way, we share in the benefits of his body and blood, not physically but by faith and become spiritually stronger and grow in grace. Although we don’t fully understand how this happens, the Lord’s Supper is a picture of spiritual feeding. Just as we are strengthened physically by eating a meal, receiving the Lord’s Supper gives us spiritual strength and blessing from him. The Lord’s Supper is to be received by all believers. Nevertheless, according to our Book of Government, before children may receive the Lord’s Supper, they are required to give their testimony of saving faith to our elders.
