The Mission of Adult Sunday School at Christ Evangelical Presbyterian Church is to glorify God by providing teaching, encouragement, and support to our church family.
Each Sunday morning adults can choose from a variety of Sunday School classes. Formats vary from topical studies to systematic Bible studies taught by the pastoral staff and lay teachers. Sunday School begins at 9:00 AM and is followed by Coffee, Cookies, & Conversation at 10:00 and Worship at 10:30.
We invite and encourage you to participate with us in one of our Sunday school classes as we, together, seek to know God through Jesus Christ in a more personal and intimate way.
In August, all adult Sunday school classes will meet together in the Worship Center for a series focused on evangelism. Please join us!
New adult Sunday school classes being Sunday, September 6, at 9 am. Join us!
Teacher: Roger Wernette
The class will study Paul’s letter to the Colossians. In the first two chapters, Paul discusses the identity of Christ. In chapters 3–4, he makes some practical applications of how the life of Christ should be applied in the life of the believer. Applications include the emotional, family, and spiritual lives of the Christian. Everyone knows that we should be sound in our doctrine and theology, but we also have to remind ourselves that good doctrine will make a difference in the way we live our lives.
Facilitator: Dan Tidwell
This year we will conclude our study in Systematic Theology. Utilizing the video series, Foundations, by R.C. Sproul, we will discover Reformed views of Justification, Saving Faith, Union with Christ, Sanctification, Perseverance of the Saints, The Church, Worship, The Sacraments, Death and Resurrection, and The Final Judgement. The lesson is supported each week with prepared notes that can be used during the week for personal study. Our class is structured with a presentation of a 20-25 minute video, a short teaching time, and lots of discussion.
Teacher: Freddie Albaugh
We will begin the fall with a four week study, Marriage that Works: Pursuing Our God-given Roles. We will look at the struggles of marriage and how God grows us in faith through our marriages. Following that study, we will focus on the book of Esther, asking “What does the Book that never mentions the name God have to say about the God of the universe and His work in this world?”
Teacher: Richard Harris
The study of God, or theology, gets a bad rap in many churches. Seminary professor John Frame says the following: “The best way to define theology is as the application of the whole Bible to the whole of human life. Theology is teaching the Bible for the purpose of meeting human needs. It answers human questions, tries to relieve doubts, applies texts to life-situations.” We are going to be doing theology together every Sunday, which means that we are going to be applying what the Bible says about God and people to life in Houston today for young adults.
Teacher: Dr. Bob Roane
This fall, we will focus on Randy Alcorn’s book Heaven. Reviewers call this “the most comprehensive and definitive book on Heaven to date,” which invites us to picture Heaven the way Scripture describes it—a bright, vibrant, and physical New Earth, free from sin, suffering, and death, and brimming with Christ’s presence, wondrous natural beauty, and the richness of human culture as God intended it. Since God has put eternity in our hearts, our studies will aim to bring eternity to light in a way that will surprise us, spark our imagination, and change how we live today.
Teachers: Larry Bickle, Joe Ince, and Jack Thetford
This class will focus on Paul’s letters in chronological order alongside a look at their historical context. An examination of the life of the first century church and significant historical events will shed fresh light on Paul’s familiar letters.
Facilitator: Butch Alexander
This class involves scripture reading, discussion, and a great deal of lab work; that is, prayer. If you are a prayer warrior or would like to become one, this class is for you. You may participate on a drop-in basis, attending occasionally or regularly, to pray with others in our church.
Teacher: John Crimmins
This class is for anyone interested in joining our church (a requirement for membership) or wanting to know more about what we believe and why. The six-week class is taught in the Worship Center during the Sunday school hour beginning September 13.
