MISSION
To build competence and confidence in students diagnosed with learning disabilities and/or ADHD through the NILD (Discovery) Educational Therapy Model
VISION
With the guidance and direction of the Holy Spirit and with the NILD educational therapy, develop independent and active learners in order for them to pursue God’s purpose for their lives.
PHILOSOPHY
Every child is individually gifted by God’s design and can maximize academic excellence through cognitive stimulation offered through specific NILD educational therapy techniques.
SERVICE DELIVERY
Individuals enrolled in the CEPC Discovery Program receive specialized and individualized NILD Educational Therapy instruction two times a week for eighty minutes by specially trained NILD educational therapists. This non-tutorial program uses a variety of techniques to stimulate deficits in reading, writing, mathematics, spelling, listening, and reasoning skills in order for the individuals to become more independent and active in the classroom setting and life.
TARGET GROUP
Second through 12th graders who are average to above average intelligence and have been diagnosed with learning differences and/or attention deficit disorder
HISTORY
The model of NILD Educational Therapy was developed in the 1960’s by Deborah Zimmerman, a nurse and educator. Many of her techniques were developed through her work with pioneers of the early research in learning disabilities at Bellevue Medical Center in New York alongside of Archie Silver, M.D., and Rosa Hagin, Ph.D. The National Institute for Learning Disabilities was founded by Grace Mutzabaugh, former principal of Norfolk Christian Lower School in 1982. Grace became God’s instrument of grace in establishing the first school-based program utilizing intense one-on-one cognitive strategies designed to teach students how to correctly perceive, process and convey information. The amazing success of students in the program soon led to an appeal for similar programs in other Christian schools throughout the United States and around the world.
